Azulejo painting: what we do
From tile to mosaic
In this session, we treat the tile not as a final product, but as a raw material with a future. Each piece painted here is destined to become part of something larger, whether kept whole or intentionally broken and rearranged within a mosaic composition.
We begin by understanding the ceramic surface itself: how pigments behave on raw glaze, how the material absorbs and resists, and how color transforms in the kiln. This is where we manufacture the specific tones and textures we will later need in our mosaic work.
The art of the pattern
Drawing inspiration from Lisbon's historic facades, we design motifs that carry the spirit of Portuguese heritage while leaving room for reinvention. A pattern that works on a single tile can be broken apart and rebuilt into something entirely new, layered with reclaimed glass and stone to create unexpected compositions. The Majolica technique guides our brushwork: slow, deliberate, attentive to the glaze beneath.
What the fire changes
Once fired, the tile gains the durability and luminosity that makes it a seamless partner to salvaged materials in our Modern Mosaic workshops. This session is both a practice in craft and a preparation. What you paint today, you may break tomorrow, and in that breaking, something more interesting begins.
